Angina Life Insurance

Navigating Life Insurance Options After an Angina Diagnosis

Living with Angina presents unique challenges, especially when it comes to safeguarding your family’s future with life insurance. It can be difficult to know what options are available, and what level of financial support you should be seeking. You might be concerned you won’t get any cover, or the cost of your premiums will increase substantially. At Your Life Protected, we provide the answers, guidance and the best solutions for your specific medical background, all in one place.

What is Angina?

Angina is chest pain that happens when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood and is usually a symptom of underlying heart disease. Angina can feel like tightness, squeezing, pressure, or pain in your chest. It can also occur in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. The condition is typically caused by:

  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) – CAD is the most common cause of Angina and happens when the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle become hardened and narrowed.
  • Microvascular Angina – Microvascular angina can occur because of small blood vessels of the heart not working properly.

The severity and frequency of Angina symptoms individuals experience, will impact the treatment options, these can include:

  • Medications: The first port of call when it comes to most angina treatments is to seek treatment and try and control the symptoms using drugs. This would include medications to help relax the blood vessels such as GTN spray and medication to prevent blood clots from forming.
  • Angioplasty and Stent Insertion: Depending on the severity of your angina, and the health of the surrounding blood vessels, your doctor may recommend you have an angioplasty and stenting. This procedure widens blocked arteries, in an attempt to improve the blood flow to the heart.
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG): If you are not suitable for an Angioplasty your doctor may instead recommend you have a CABG. This procedure involves taking blood vessels from another area of your body (often the leg, or arm) and using them to bypass the blocked arteries around your heart.

Securing Life Insurance with Angina

If you have been diagnosed with Angina, you may previously have been refused Life Insurance. Different insurance providers have different appetites and are better with certain conditions than others. Just in the same way that one insurance company will be much cheaper for your car insurance than another, so knowing where to look is key. Your Life Protected have helped clients with pre-existing medical conditions for over a decade, we treat every client as an individual and take time to understand their circumstances before offering tailored recommendations:

My angina is Stable, will this still affect Life Insurance applications?

Previous treatment and current medications will all play have an impact in the underwriting process (along with other medical disclosures), but those with Stable Angina will always be looked upon more favourably than someone with Unstable Angina.

I was just diagnosed with Angina; can I get Life Insurance?

For those who have recently been diagnosed with Angina, securing Life Insurance may be slightly trickier. This can be down to the fact that often after an Angina diagnosis, there may be new treatments prescribed or even procedures that need to be completed. Every case is assessed individually, so if you’ve recently been diagnosed with Angina, speak with one of our experts.

How much will Angina affect my Life Insurance premium?

Some people may see their price increase by 50% and others may be refused cover altogether.  To find out how much you’ll end up paying, speak to one of our experts who can assess your personal circumstances.
